This, frankly, served two purposes: it gave them a chance to work on their crude compositional skills without much pressure as B-sides weren't listened to by the public nearly as much as A-sides or even many LP tracksand it generated some publishing income, since the B-sides of 45s were awarded as many royalties as the A-sides. It's been suggested that it's a reworking of one of Reed 's songs, "Shame, Shame, Shame," though frankly so many of Reed 's songs sounded alike that it was more derivative of Reed in general than of any Reed song in particular.

It does give Keith Richards a chance to Tommy Hawk - Chet Baker - The Pacific Jazz Collection extensively in the distinctive blues-rock style he was perfecting. This was one of the Stones tracks recorded when Phil Spector and Gene Pitney stopped by the studio to lend a helping hand the more famous one from this session was "Not Fade Away"and Pitney was credited with playing piano on "Little By Little," though it's been suggested that it may have been Ian Stewart.

Spector is credited with playing maracas on the track, and was also given a co-writing credit, shared with " Phelge ," a pseudonym for the Rolling Stones as a whole though " Nanker-Phelge " was more commonly used for that purpose.

Though one of the most obscure Rolling Stones songs, "Little By Little" was actually covered in early by another British band, the Pickwicks, on a recording that used Jimmy Page as a session guitarist.
